Participants will have the opportunity to particpate during all 4 breakout session. Please register for 1 time per session. Please make sure the session times do not conflict.

School Readiness, Speaker: Margaret Childer (ESSS Program Overview)

Children's readiness for successful transition into kindergarten needs to be viewed as a community responsibility. Parents, prekindergarten teachers, elementary schools, and local community programs working together provide the best base for children's success in school. Readiness needs to be defined in broad developmental terms so that the uniqueness of each child is preserved and respected. Children's School Readiness is affected by the early care and learning experiences they receive. The research in brain development emphasizes that early learning (especially from birth to five) directly influences a child's ability to learn and succeed in school.

Summer Learning, Speaker: Cara Schrack (SummerBoost Camp Overview)

Summer break for children often brings to mind family vacations, camp, trips to museums and libraries, and an array of additional enriching activities with families and with summer learning programs. Unfortunately, research shows that the summer months can also be a time when children experience summer learning loss, falling behind in key areas like reading and math. Summer learning programs often play a critical role during the summer months to inspire learning, provide academically enriching activities, keep kids safe and healthy, and support working families. Not only do summer learning programs keep children engaged in academically enriching activities that help stem the "summer slide," they also help parents ensure their kids are getting nutritious food and safe during summer. This session highlights the important role summer learning programs play in the life of high-needs children.

Community Engagement, Speaker: Virginia Berry White (Save the Children Community Engagement Model Overview)

Community engagement is “the process of working collaboratively with and through groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest or similar situations to address issues affecting the well-being of those people.” It “involves partnerships and coalitions that help mobilize resources and influence systems, change relationships among partners, and serve as a catalyst for changing policies, programs and practices.” Community engagement increases your program’s influence and ability to achieve the change you desire. It broadens your base of support and can put you in touch with important contacts to leverage resources and get specialized expertise. That kind of support not only makes a program more effective but also improves its prospects for sustainability.

Afterschool Programs, Speaker: Dr. Sabrina B. Moore (Save the Children Afterschool Programs Overview)

Afterschool programs have the ability to help address inequalities facing families living in communities of concentrated poverty. More and more, parents understand the benefits of afterschool programs and are enrolling their kids in record numbers. The research on afterschool programs is vast and continues to grow, with more than 15 years’ worth of evaluations and data on afterschool program participation spanning a decade. This session includes materials that present the highlights of afterschool facts and figures in a short and succinct package. Looking for figures that establish the need for afterschool programs? Is there a cost associated with the summit?

No, the summit is FREE! All sessions will be free and lunch will be provided during the summit.

How can I register for the SC Save the Children summit?

If you’re unable to complete the Eventbrite registration, please complete the paper registration before the deadline date of May15, 2017 (instructions noted on the registration form)

Do I need to register for the lunch and general session?

Yes, we expect all participants to register for the free general and lunch sessions—if they plan to attend both

Can I register for all 4 breakout sessions?

Yes, participants can register for all free breakout session-2 morning sessions and 2 afternoon sessions

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Free parking at the summit location

Will I be able to receive CEU credits for the Summit?

CEU will not be available this year. However, Save the Children will explore this option for future trainings
